Consequently, now is the time to begin researching and funding your business.
We are at the ground level of an upcoming technological boom. Drones are going to enhance work forces, businesses, the military, family fun time, photography, cinema, and so much more. It is essential we put our foot in the door before the market saturates itself (and it will). Next is the fun part, you must purchase a drone.
If you are new to flying drones, I urge you to purchase a starter model. Beginners are prone to more accidents, crashes, and maneuvering mishaps that can damage your device. Drones can be expensive, many some reaching upwards of $500 dollars. So, before you commit to something like the DJI Phantom 4 and accidentally shatter its propellers against a wall, try something a little less heavy-duty.
Start with a beginner’s model
There are plenty of easy-going start models for you to choose from, and more are coming out by the day. Amazon, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and many other outlets are now carrying DJI and Parrot drones. Browse around and make an educated decision for yourself.
Next, it is essential that you review your drone’s instruction manual. You should known your drone like the back of your hand, inside and out, from its firmware all the way to its hard exo-shell. This ensures that you will be comfortable and prepared when handling their device.
Practicing your pilot skills
Now, find a safe place free of bystanders and obstructions to begin your journey from novice, to no-joke. Practice is key! Simple actions like taking off and landing, spinning at different degrees, and utilizing your drone’s functions are all part of becoming an advanced pilot.
With exercises and practice, you will soon be able to fly your drone comfortably and efficiently. This allows you to better suit you or your client’s needs. Your snapshots will gradually become scenic, and your videography will become smoother.
Certifications and Permits
According to new FAA rules, a commercial drone operator is required to have a Remote Pilot Certificate. Wannabe pilots must undertake and pass aeronautical knowledge test, which includes questions about aeronautical charts and understanding aviation weather reports. It requires a minimum of $150 to take the test. Once you have passed, the TSA will then conduct a background check on you. Then, the best part comes – if deemed successful by the FAA, you’ll receive your certification.

Equipment to Succeed
All drones features the same basic design. They come with an accelerometer that measures roll, yaw, and pitch. Each drone can adjust its motors individually, allowing them to hover. You can pilot them via remote controller and sometimes your cell phone. Some come equipped with a camera already – if your model doesn’t, then I would recommend buying one. All in all, they are impressive machines that can cost a fair amount, but don’t let their outstanding price tags deter you.
An average quadcopter will cost you around $300, while many commercial models are upwards of $1000. A professional drone with upgrades, a proper gimbal, and an outstanding camera can easily cost $2000. Although these numbers may seem steep to a novice, you must remember that buying a commercial drone is an investment – and proper investments always pay off in the end. Think about it, if a $2000 drone is capable of taking $200 pictures and offering $500 services – than there really isn’t much to worry about.
Marketing your Business
You have acquired the training, certifications, permits, and equipment needed to start a drone business. Now, you need to develop marketing strategies to reach your target audience. Are you looking to help survey land property? Or do you prefer shooting pictures/video and selling them? Maybe you’d like to go the surveillance route? Whatever it is, you must find people that are interested in your specific drone service.
Don’t be afraid of social media
In this day and age, there are plenty of ways to find a target audience. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, IMGUR, Pintrest, and Linkedin are the perfect vehicles for advertising your business to the public. Create a catchy page, offer stunning photos/video, and post articles that your audience will enjoy. Remember: people that follow, subscribe, and like your pages/articles/videos/etc. all help build a reputation for your business.
Create a responsive website
Next, we recommend building a website to showcase your drone service. The internet is booming like never before – everyone is using it, and using it often. Post articles, videos, how-to’s, and other valuable information that drone pilots will enjoy. Website creation and SEO is an entirely different topic, so I’ll leave it at this : do the research with passion and enthusiasm, and create content that is not only keyword optimized, but also relevant to what you provide. This is the beginning of a success formula and presence on the internet.
Giveaways are worth millions
This is one of my favorite marketing strategies, hands down! People LOVE free stuff – especially free technology. Consider hyping up your marketing by offering your followers the chance to win a drone, beautiful aerial photos, an interesting e-book, or whatever else you see fits – as long as they subscribe to your website with an e-mail address. This not only build incredible steam for your company, but also gives you a chance to start building a mailing list.
Remember, the more people that like your company, content, mission, and personality, the better. Make your business known and be passionate about it. The proper attitude and knowledge will always breed success.
